Now that the Dining Hall is complete, my time as your blogger has ended.  It's been a pleasure keeping you updated on the new Mack Dick Dining Hall and I hope you enjoyed the pictures and updates. 

Training to use the Dining Hall and Kitchen will begin soon and we anticipate opening it up for reservations in early January.  The training will be announced soon via Constant Contact.

Mack Dick Dining Hall Dedication and Open House

The Dedication and Open House will take place on November 10, 2013 at 3pm.  All are welcome to attend and see the beautiful new Dining Hall!

Hello Scouters!

We are now in the 3rd week of October and the Dining Hall is 99 percent completed!  The "Punch List" repairs have been completed and the Kitchen Equipment connections are almost done.  This place is just amazing inside and out and we can't wait to show it off.  We are looking at mid November as a possible Open House but once the date is confirmed, watch our Council Website for the information.  Here is a picture taken from the exact same place as the final picture of the old Dining Hall before it was taken down.

Front Porch Picture

The Dining Hall construction is moving at a fast pace.  The main floor is being installed now and the kitchen equipment is in place and being connected.  The landscapers are on site and should be done mid next week.  We expect that late next week we will be able to go through the facility and determine if anything needs attention before the final turnover of the keys.  Getting excited!!!!

DH nearly finished

The Dining Hall construction is almost complete!.  The new date is tentatively Oct 1 and then we do a look over to see what needs to be repaired after the contractors are done.  We are expecting early October before we get the keys.  I have attached a new picture!

New Picture

As one wonders around the Dining Hall complex, you never know what you might see and say, what's that? 

This is the Booster Pump for the Fire Extinguishing system.  If the system goes off inside the DH and the sensor detect low water pressure, this contraption boosts the water pressure to help put the fire out.  We don't want to EVER see this thing work (unless it's being tested yearly of course)!

Updated Photos

Just returned from a Construction Meeting and WOW have things changed over three weeks.  The anticipated completion date is now September 30.  The outside paint is complete, the Kitchen Equipment will be delivered next week, the main water line is connected, the lights are all up inside and outside and they are connecting the fire suppression system.  See the pictures below!

Kitchen Hood Picture

The Dining Hall is coming along nicely.  They are still on schedule even with the rain this week. It's very muddy but we will take the moisture!  The windows are all in, the Sheetrock is about 60 percent done, and the Heating and Air Conditioning is just about completely installed- wow- Central Air!!!

Dining Hall Siding

The siding is just about complete throughout the building.  The sheetrock installation is about halfway fininshed.  The windows are installed and they look great.  We are still on schedule to be finished in October pending weather and any changes.

Almost ready for windows!

The Dining Hall is really coming together now.  The roof is just about done and the wrap is on!  The builder tells us that they anticipate windows going in this Friday and Sheetrock work starting inside next week.  When you are standing in the hall, you really get a sense of the size of this building.  Check out the latest photo below!

Below is the most current picture of the Dining Hall.  The builder tells us that the walls will be up and the building will be enclosed by the end of next week!

A building is forming!

Today, most of the Roof Trusses are up and the slab of concrete is looking more like a building!  The kitchen framing is up as well (the metal frames you see in the picture).  The latest update for completion is now the end of September pending weather.  Check out the photo below!

Yesterday, the roof trusses arrived.  These were made in Idaho and trucked directly to Camp Don Harrington.

Kitchen Concrete poured

The Kitchen area has concrete now!  Just a few more things to do and the framers will start.  The Roof Trusses have also arrived.  More photos will be coming soon!

Slab Ready for Pouring

The new Dining Hall is beginning to take shape.  The rough plumbing, water, electrical, and gas are done and the slab is ready to be poured.  With the upcoming cold weather, there may be a day or two delay but we are still ahead of schedule.  Construction meetings are now being held every two weeks at the site so the Council (owners), Builder, and the Architects can discuss timelines, concerns, issues etc.  It's already a great partnership with all involved!  Check out the pictures below!

Concrete and Utilities Update

The footings have been poured and the utilities (plumbing, gas, electricity, drains) are being placed.  We expect the slab to be poured mid next week and then within two days, the framers will come.  Check out the pictures below!

Ready for concrete today

Wow what a week!  The footing trenches have been dug, the rebar is in, the utilities are ready- it's concrete time!  According to the onsite Superintendent, we are ahead of schedule!  In fact, the slab will be poured next week and the framers will be onsite soon after.  The timbers will be delivered from Idaho on May 2.  Take a look at the photo's below!

The dirt work is now complete and the area is laid out for the contractor to come in on Monday to dig the footing trench. Once that's done, concrete will be poured.  They will also trench for the utilities and get that process started.  Then it's on to pouring the slab!  The slab will be 7inches above the current dirt level!

Dining Hall Dirt Work

The "Dirt Work" has begun and it appears that all the old dirt was taken out and replaced with better soil prior to building.  If you look close, you can see the footprint of the new building.  Big piles of dirt are on the parade ground waiting to be hauled off.  Making progress!!!

Groundbreaking has taken place

The Groundbreaking Ceremony took place on Monday, March 11 at 4pm.  Members of the Executive Board, Volunteers, Media, and other interested folks attended this ceremony.  We are excited to get the construction under way and this is the official start.  Thanks to all who made the effort to attend.  Below is a picture of the ceremony!

Debris Hauled Away

The debris was hauled away today- a very long process as you can imagine.  Over 50 semi's were in and out of camp. The dead trees have been removed and the concrete slab has begun to be removed.

Attached is a video that was taken on demolition day.  Pretty interesting to watch.

Dining Hall Demo has begun!

                                                                    The New Dining Hall


Today, the Dining Hall is no more.  At 9:25am, the "Claw" started up and began to methodically take out trees.  Come to find out, they were pretty decayed inside and would have had to come down this year so this actually saved us time and money.  The operator then moved on to start taking the building down.  Piece by piece, section by section, he removed the building.  With great respect, we watched him remove the roof, the walls, and the history that this building has within but we also know that the new hall will bring new memories to thousands of today's Scouts and leaders and those in the future. At 10:30am, the building was no more- just a slab of concrete to be taken out once the debris was cleared off.

Dining Hall Contract Awarded

The Dining Hall building contract has been awarded to Plains Builders!  Congratulations!  We will be meeting with them at a Pre-Construction Meeting soon but we expect the demolition to begin in the next 3 weeks.

Hello Scouters!

Yesterday afternoon, January 23, 2013, we had all the General Contractors and several Sub Contractors down at Camp Don.  This was their opportunity to take a look at the current facility and surrounding area before putting their individual bids together.  We will be reviewing all the bids on February 5th.

Overview

Many of you are aware that the Golden Spread Council will be building a new Dining Hall at Camp Don Harrington.  While the current facility has many fond memories, the new one will create even more memories.  A Committee of volunteers have raised the funds to build a beautiful and much larger, better equipped Dining Hall for current and future Scouts and leaders. 

Although in the works for over two years, the design is finished and the plans have been approved.  We are excited to tell you that the journey of watching the new Dining Hall be built from the ground up is about to begin!

This new blog will allow us to keep you informed of the progress and occasionally show you some pictures as the Dining Hall is being built.

These are exciting times and we hope you are just as excited to see this project start so that our current Scouts and adult leaders and our future ones as well, can begin using this facility that will create memories just like you have now.
